With such easy access from the M6 and A6 the Lodge is also a perfect overnight stop on a journey to or from Scotland. Just follow the brown tourist signs for Bracken Bank Lodge, with the symbol for a country house, that are on the A6. You will find country pubs serving real ale in all the villages and Lakeland towns. Afternoon tea is served in many of the fine hotels including the world renowned Sharrow Bay at Ullswater. In the neighboring village is The Highland Drove which has won the northern pub of the year award and is well known for its excellent food. In the nearby village of Melmerby is the organic restaurant The Village Bakery who sell bread to Waitrose, they serve wonderful lunches and afternoon tea. Also fully organic is Little Salkeld Watermill where you can see the flour being milled, enjoy great food and buy organic flour to take home. Penrith is well known for its charming specialist shops, the famous Toffee Shop is ideal for presents to take home, it also sells fudge that is "easily the best in the world" according to Lord Lichfield and all the locals. After a day of sightseeing and outdoor activities the private Estate is ideal for tranquil walks, nature watching and idyllic evenings spent sitting by the lakes.The gardens also offer a peaceful retreat for croquet and relaxing by the fountain. Some of the bedrooms in this family home are available for B&B guests. All the bedrooms are individually designed and have a flat screen digital television, hair dryer, towels, alarm clock, complimentary toiletries, quality mattresses and bedding and crisp white bed linen. Room 10 is a romantic bedroom with a king size four poster bed. The ensuite bathroom has an antique cast iron roll top bath. This room also has a balcony with table and chairs overlooking the gardens and fountain. Rooms 4 and 5 are two stunning bedrooms with very impressive double four poster beds. These bedrooms overlook the paddocks and estate, both have separate traditionally furnished bathrooms with original cast iron baths and Ralph Lauren tartan wallpaper. Rooms 11 and 12 are very pretty single four poster rooms overlooking the cobbled courtyard, they have a shower room and separate lavatory. Breakfast for B&B guests include a full English breakfast cooked on the Aga. Tea, coffee, orange juice, toast, butter, marmalade, jam and a buffet of cereals, fresh fruit, cereal bars etc. accompany the full English. Breakfast is served at 9am in the Red Dining Room unless otherwise arranged at the time of booking. At weekends you may prefer to be served at 10am (or even later). It is possible to have an early breakfast at any time, these breakfasts will be buffet style. Please advise us at the time of booking if you would like a vegetarian, vegan or early breakfast. There is a very good selection of complimentary tea, coffee, mineral water, herbal drinks, hot chocolates and biscuits. Alcoholic drinks are available for purchase when the estate office is open. Champagne, wine, flowers and chocolates for your room on arrival may be ordered at the time of booking. There is free private parking and wireless internet access at the Lodge.
